introducing

two rare italian street scenes by the world-renowned italian artist

lazzaro pasini (1861-1949)

Lazzaro Pasini was born in Reggio Emilia in 1861. He studied at the Accademia in Florence under Giovanni Fattori and from 1886 worked in Milan among a group of artists including the sculptor Nicola Fiore.

Pasini held many exhibitions including a show at the Esposizione Nazionale in Turin in 1884 and at an exhibition of work of the Lombard artists in Milan in 1900. In 1912, 1914 and 1922 he held further exhibitions in Venice, London, Antwerp and Leningrad.

The artist's fine attention to detail and sentimental subjects meant that his work had popular appeal. He died in Milan in 1949.

introducing

'from a unique perspective'

a stunning collection of original works

by the cheshire-born artist

david j porter

Hello Everyone

I am delighted to introduce a delightful body of work by the  much-acclaimed artist David J Porter.

Born and educated in Cheshire, over the years David has successfully divided his career as a freelance designer and professional artist.

Mainly self-taught he specializes in contemporary landscape, achieving a semi-abstract / part representational composition. Inspired by his many walks and visits abroad which he sketches often in charcoal, then re-assesses the subject in the studio. By applying blocks of vivid colour in such a way as to ‘suggest’ parts of the landscape, he stimulates the onlooker’s imagination to interpret the landscape in a different way. He is continually moving boundaries in his work by keeping the process in a state of flux.

David has shown in solo and group exhibitions in numerous galleries also achieving recognition as a Laings Regional Finalist and Royal Academy Summer Exhibition Finalist. His work can be seen in private collections throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.

introducing

'the spring collection'

by the acclaimed coastal

scene artist

darren stevenson

I am delighted to introduce the 'Spring Collection' by the renowned coastal scene artist Darren Stevenson.

Strongly influenced by the Romantic artists such as J M W Turner, for Darren the impulse and the rapid outdoor sketch seems more truthful than the painting carefully worked up in the studio.  Working from motif, in his travels from coast to coast Darren paints what is actually in front of him. As the light changes continually throughout the day, capturing 'the instant' can mean a work which takes many hours to complete.

525. [N01876] Sunset c. 1830–5

THE TATE GALLERY, LONDON (1876)

Coll. Turner Bequest 1856; transferred to the Tate Gallery 1928.

Exh. Newcastle 1912 (55).

Lit. Burnet 1852, p. 58; Thornbury 1862, i, p. 169; 1877, p. 121; Armstrong 1902, p. 232; Gage 1969, pp. 36–7, 231 n. 92 (mistakenly as No. 469).

Possibly the work referred to by the younger Trimmer as being among the rolled canvases in the Turner Bequest (Thornbury, loc cit.,; see p. 104): ‘There is a red sunset (simply the sky) among these rolls, the finest sky, to my mind, ever put on canvas.’ The other works mentioned by Trimmer are the larger Thames sketches of c. 1806–7 but this painting was probably painted considerably later, perhaps in the early 1830s. It is however darkened by discoloured megilp which makes assessment difficult.

It may also be the subject of the story told to Burnet by the dealer Woodburn: ‘Driving down to his house at Hendon, a beautiful sunset burst forth; Turner asked to stop the carriage, and remained a long time in silent contemplation. Some weeks afterwards, when Woodburn called on him in Queen Anne Street, he saw this identical sky in his gallery, and wished to have a landscape added to it: Turner refused the commission—he would not part with it.’
